A Two Way Relationship

The planet shapes us, but we are also reshaping the planet.

The food we produce, the energy we use, the cities we build and the resources we consume all leave traces on Earth’s systems. Human activity contributes to climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, placing increasing pressure on the natural systems that support life (Rockström et al., 2023).

But the relationship does not end there.

What we change in the environment eventually finds its way back to us. Rising temperatures increase heat-related health risks. Changes in rainfall and ecosystems can affect food and water security. Shifting climates can alter the spread of infectious diseases, while air pollution and extreme weather can influence both physical and mental health (Campbell-Lendrum et al., 2023).

We change the planet. The planet changes the conditions in which we live.

It is a continuous feedback loop, one that connects our environment, our societies and our bodies more closely than we might imagine.

Perhaps protecting the planet is not simply about protecting nature.

It is also about protecting ourselves.
